Haiti carnival: 1 dead, 120 hurt

Port-au-Prince – A police spokesman in Haiti says one person has been killed and 120 others revellers have been injured in accidents and in street clashes during Carnival festivities.

Gary Desrosiers of the Haitian police force says most of the injuries stemmed from skirmishes in the streets of Les Cayes. He says a 29-year-old man died when he fell and was crushed by a Carnival truck.

Government officials estimate 300 000 people took part in this year’s Carnival, which for the first time in memory was held outside Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince.

Organisers opted to hold Carnival in the southern coastal city of Les Cayes because a settlement camp in downtown Port-au-Prince still houses thousands of people displaced by the 2010 earthquake. – Sapa-AP
